COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Mathematics with Computer Science programme at the University of Reading provides a rigorous blend of mathematical theory and computational skills designed to prepare students for analytical and technology-driven careers. In the early stages, students build a strong foundation through compulsory modules such as Probability and Statistics, Calculus, Foundations of Mathematics, Linear Algebra, Imperative Programming, and Object-Oriented Programming, developing core skills in algebra, calculus, logical reasoning, probability, and programming in Java. In the second stage, learning advances into more complex areas including Differential Equations, Artificial Intelligence, Mathematical Modelling and Professional Skills, Numerical Analysis I, Programming in Python, and Real Analysis I, which strengthen problem-solving abilities and introduce applications in AI, modelling, and scientific computing. In the final year, students complete a Portfolio of Projects, allowing them to apply mathematical and computational techniques to real-world problems while developing independent research and professional skills. A wide range of optional modules enables specialisation in areas such as machine learning, data visualisation, cryptography, stochastic processes, numerical analysis, dynamical systems, and mathematical physics. Students may also undertake a summer placement to gain industry experience.
