COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Geography (Human) degree at the University of Reading provides a structured exploration of human societies and their relationship with environments through a combination of theoretical, methodological, and applied learning. In the first stage, students are introduced to core geographical thinking through modules such as Skills in Geography and Environmental Science, Global Challenges: A Planet in Crisis, Geographical Imaginaries, and Approaching Human Geography, alongside a Field Class. These modules develop essential academic standards, research skills, and a strong understanding of key global issues from human, physical, and environmental geography perspectives. Students also gain early experience in fieldwork, teamwork, and data collection using real-world methods and equipment. In the second stage, students build on this foundation through Skills Training and Project Design, another Field Class, and Living Together: Social and Cultural Geographies, which explores themes such as identity, inequality, landscape, and consumption using both quantitative and qualitative approaches. This stage strengthens students’ ability to design and implement independent research projects while enhancing employability and analytical skills. In the final stage, students complete a dissertation, an independent research project that allows them to investigate a specialised topic with academic supervision. Across the programme, students develop critical thinking, fieldwork expertise, and strong analytical and communication skills, preparing them to engage with complex human geography issues in academic and professional contexts.
