COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Geography (Human and Physical) programme develops a strong foundation in understanding both environmental systems and human societies through a structured progression of compulsory modules. In the first stage, students are introduced to core geographical thinking through Skills in Geography and Environmental Science, Global Challenges, Restless Planet, Geographical Imaginaries, and a Field Class. These modules build essential academic, analytical, and fieldwork skills while exploring key Earth system processes and pressing global issues such as climate change, inequality, and environmental change. Students also gain hands-on experience collecting and analysing data in real-world environments, helping them develop practical research competencies. In the second stage, the focus shifts towards advanced methodological training and applied geographical inquiry through Skills Training and Project Design, alongside another Field Class that examines human geography themes such as urban change, globalisation, and social and economic development. This stage prepares students for independent research by strengthening project management, employability, and analytical skills. In the final stage, students complete a dissertation, an independent research project that allows them to investigate a specialist topic in depth under academic supervision. Across the degree, students develop a combination of theoretical understanding, technical expertise, and field-based experience, equipping them to analyse complex human-environment relationships and address real-world environmental and societal challenges.
