COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Environmental Science degree at the University of Reading develops students’ understanding of Earth systems and environmental processes through a strong foundation in fieldwork, laboratory analysis, and data-driven scientific methods. In the first year, students are introduced to core academic expectations and key concepts in geography and environmental science, including global environmental challenges such as climate change, resource depletion, and ecosystem degradation. They gain essential skills in scientific research, academic writing, data interpretation, and teamwork while engaging in practical learning through field classes, site visits, and laboratory work that examine real-world environmental conditions. A strong emphasis is placed on developing quantitative and analytical abilities through data-focused modules that teach statistical techniques and environmental data presentation. In the second year, students build on these foundations with more advanced training in project design, environmental diagnostics, and applied field research, often working collaboratively in real environmental settings. They also develop professional competencies such as project management, employability skills, and research planning under academic supervision. In the final year, students undertake an independent dissertation, allowing them to design and conduct their own in-depth research project on a specialised environmental topic. Overall, the programme integrates theoretical knowledge with hands-on scientific investigation, preparing graduates for careers in environmental consultancy, conservation, geoscience, pollution management, and environmental research, as well as for further postgraduate study.
