COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Environmental Management and Sustainability degree at the University of Reading develops an interdisciplinary understanding of ecological, social, and economic dimensions of environmental change, with a strong emphasis on practical application and professional skills. In the first year, students explore core themes such as global sustainability challenges, ecological systems, environmental management practices, and international development issues affecting both global and local communities. They are introduced to essential academic and professional skills including research methods, scientific writing, digital literacy, teamwork, and project planning. Students also examine tools and strategies used in real-world environmental management, including habitat mapping and environmental assessment techniques. In the final year, students undertake an independent research project where they design and conduct their own study on a sustainability-related topic, applying the skills and knowledge developed throughout the degree. They also study transitions to sustainability, exploring how organisations, governments, and industries adapt to environmental challenges and implement sustainable practices. Overall, the programme combines scientific understanding with socio-economic insight and practical training, preparing graduates for careers in environmental consultancy, conservation, policy, sustainability management, and related fields.
