COURSE CURRICULUM

BSc Construction Management and Surveying at the University of Reading is a multidisciplinary degree that combines construction management, surveying, project delivery, commercial management, and sustainability to prepare students for leadership roles within the construction and built environment sectors. The programme develops both technical and managerial expertise, giving students a broad understanding of how construction projects are designed, procured, managed, and delivered. In the first year, students build a strong foundation through modules in construction science, construction technology, economics, law, site engineering, project management, communication, and digital construction technologies including Building Information Modelling (BIM). The second year focuses on the practical management of construction projects, covering project planning, cost control, quality management, logistics, procurement, contract law, environmental systems, digitalisation, measurement and quantification of construction work, and building pathology. Students also work on collaborative projects where they develop sustainable construction solutions and gain experience of professional roles within the industry. In the final year, students undertake a Built Environment Management Project and an independent dissertation while studying advanced topics such as construction project management, commercial surveying, advanced building pathology, quantification and costing, and contract management. A wide range of optional modules allows further specialisation in digital construction technologies, human resource management, health and safety, inclusive environments, and sustainability-focused subjects including Sustainable Built Environments, Environmental Management and Assessment, and Green Innovation in Construction. Sustainability is a core theme throughout the degree, reflecting the construction industry's responsibility in achieving environmental goals and net-zero targets. The programme is accredited by both the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), providing a strong pathway towards professional chartered status. Students may also undertake paid summer placements or transfer to a four-year version with a full industry placement year, gaining valuable practical experience and professional connections. Graduates leave with strong analytical, technical, managerial, commercial, and leadership skills, enabling careers in construction management, project management, commercial management, surveying, consultancy, property development, and other senior roles within the built environment sector. The course is delivered at the University of Reading’s main campus, Whiteknights Campus, which offers modern facilities, industry-focused teaching, and excellent links with construction professionals and employers.
