COURSE CURRICULUM

The Chemistry with Cosmetic Science programme at the University of Reading combines core chemical sciences with specialised cosmetic science training across three years of study. In the early stages, students build a strong foundation through compulsory modules such as Mathematics for Chemists, Chemistry Practicals, and core subjects in inorganic, organic, physical, and biological chemistry, covering atomic structure, bonding, reactivity, molecular organisation, and cellular principles of life. As the programme progresses, students study advanced topics including transition-metal chemistry, reaction mechanisms, equilibrium, and analytical techniques, alongside further laboratory training to strengthen experimental and scientific communication skills. A key component of the degree is Core Cosmetic Science, where students learn about cosmetic formulation, ingredient chemistry, consumer perception, ethics, and product design. In later years, Further Cosmetic Science deepens understanding of formulation, colour chemistry, preservation, and regulatory frameworks. The course also includes a final-year research project where students undertake independent investigation using modern chemical techniques and present findings in written and oral formats. Optional modules broaden learning into areas such as pharmaceutical chemistry, environmental chemistry, polymers, solid-state chemistry, Python and AI applications in chemistry, and innovation and product development. Students may also gain real-world experience through school outreach projects or industry-focused learning. Overall, the programme prepares graduates for careers in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, chemical industries, research, and product development.
