COURSE CURRICULUM
The BSc Bioveterinary Sciences degree at the University of Reading provides comprehensive training in animal health, welfare, nutrition, disease management, and veterinary-related sciences through a combination of laboratory work, research projects, and applied scientific study. In the first year, students build a strong scientific foundation by studying animal anatomy, physiology and nutrition, animal behaviour, welfare and ethics, biochemistry, microbiology, cellular and molecular biology, and introductory bioveterinary research methods. These modules develop an understanding of how animals function as biological systems, the causes of health and disease, microbial infections, animal welfare principles, and the biological processes that underpin life. During the second year, students expand their expertise in animal nutrition, reproduction, veterinary health, immunology, epidemiology, data analysis, experimental design, and research techniques through practical project work. Optional modules allow students to specialise in areas such as livestock production and welfare, zoo and exotic animal science, molecular microbiology, and conservation science. In the final year, students undertake an independent research project, applying advanced scientific methods to investigate a topic of their choice while developing professional research, analytical, and communication skills. Additional optional modules explore advanced livestock production and product quality, companion animal science, equine science and management, zoonotic diseases, and contemporary issues affecting animal health, welfare, sustainability, and food production. Throughout the degree, students gain practical laboratory experience, statistical and data-analysis skills, scientific writing abilities, and a deep understanding of animal biology from the molecular level to whole-animal systems. The programme emphasises evidence-based approaches to improving animal health, welfare, productivity, and sustainability across farms, veterinary settings, zoos, wildlife conservation programmes, and companion animal sectors. Graduates are well prepared for careers in animal health and welfare organisations, veterinary support services, livestock and agricultural industries, conservation agencies, research institutions, biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies, government organisations, and postgraduate study in veterinary, animal, biomedical, or life sciences.
