COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Biomedical Science degree at the University of Reading is a structured, laboratory-focused programme that builds a detailed understanding of human biology, disease mechanisms, and clinical diagnostics. In the first stage, students study core foundational modules such as Cellular and Molecular Principles of Life, Fundamentals of Microbiology, Anatomy and Physiology, Fundamentals of Biochemistry, Human Pathology, and Human Reproduction and Development in Health and Disease. These modules provide a comprehensive grounding in cell biology, microbiology, human body systems, biochemical processes, pathology, and life-course development, while also introducing the scientific basis of disease and health. In the second stage, students progress to more advanced and applied topics, including Advanced Studies in Cellular and Molecular Biology, Research and Professional Skills, Haematology and Immunology, Infectious Diseases, Medical Genetics, and Applied Biochemistry: From Disease to Diagnostics. These modules develop analytical, diagnostic, and research skills while deepening understanding of disease mechanisms, laboratory techniques, and clinical applications. In the final stage, students complete a Research Project, gaining hands-on experience in independent scientific investigation, alongside specialist study in Venoms and Poisons: From Pharmacology to Therapeutics, which explores toxin biology and medical applications. Across the programme, students develop strong practical, analytical, and research skills, preparing them for careers in biomedical science, healthcare diagnostics, laboratory research, and related medical and scientific fields.
