COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Biochemistry degree at the University of Reading provides an in-depth understanding of the molecular processes that underpin life, combining biology, chemistry, genetics, and computational sciences to prepare students for careers in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, research, and related industries. In Year 1, students build a strong scientific foundation through modules in Fundamentals of Microbiology, Anatomy and Physiology, Fundamentals of Biochemistry, Cellular and Molecular Principles of Life, and General Chemistry B, developing knowledge of cells, metabolism, microorganisms, human physiology, and chemical principles relevant to living systems. Optional modules such as Fundamentals of Evolution, History of Life on Earth, and Human Pathology allow students to broaden their scientific understanding. In Year 2, the focus shifts to advanced molecular and biomedical topics through compulsory modules including Advanced Studies in Cellular and Molecular Biology, Research and Professional Skills, Medical Genetics, Applied Biochemistry: From Disease to Diagnostics, and Bioinformatics and Computational Biology. Students also have opportunities to specialise through options such as Molecular Microbiology, Infectious Diseases, Haematology and Immunology, and Integrated Anatomy and Physiology. The final year emphasises research, innovation, and advanced laboratory skills. Core modules include a substantial Research Project, Integrated Biochemistry, and Advanced Research Techniques, where students gain experience with modern genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, and large biological datasets. A wide selection of specialist options allows students to tailor their studies to career interests, including Cancer and Cell Communication, Neuroscience, Cardiovascular Biology, Applied Microbiology, Pathogens, Forensics, Epidemiology of Zoonotic Diseases, Evolution in Health and Disease, Venoms and Poisons: From Pharmacology to Therapeutics, and Innovation and Product Development. The course is accredited by the Royal Society of Biology, enabling graduates to apply for Chartered Biologist status.
