COURSE CURRICULUM
BEng Biomedical Engineering at the University of Reading is a professionally accredited three-year engineering degree that combines biology, medicine, physics, mathematics, computing and engineering to develop technologies that diagnose, prevent and treat disease. Students learn how the human body functions while gaining practical skills in biomedical instrumentation, robotics, signal processing, medical imaging and rehabilitation technology. In Year 1, core modules include Anatomy and Physiology, Mathematics, Programming, Physical Essentials for Medicine, Robotics in Medicine and Prosthetics, and Cellular and Molecular Principles of Life, providing strong foundations in engineering and biological sciences. Year 2 develops specialist knowledge through Biomedical Sensors and Wearable Technology, Biomedical Signal Processing and Feedback Systems, Principles of Physical Interventions in Medicine, Biomedical Problem Solving and Research and Professional Skills, with optional study in Medical Genetics, Bioinformatics and Computational Biology, and advanced robotics. In the final year, students complete an independent Research Project and study Biomechanics and Soft Technologies, including assistive technologies, soft robotics and brain-computer interfaces. Optional advanced modules include Neuroscience, Medical Imaging, Diagnostic Imaging and Radiotherapy for Cancer, Synthetic Biology and Tissue Engineering, and Innovation and Product Development. The course places strong emphasis on laboratory and practical training, exposing students to techniques such as microscopy, DNA and protein analysis, cell culture, EEG recordings and biomedical data analysis. Teaching takes place in the £60 million Health and Life Sciences building, featuring state-of-the-art laboratories and research facilities. The programme is accredited by the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM), ensuring graduates meet professional standards for careers in biomedical engineering, clinical engineering, medical technology, healthcare innovation and research. Students can also choose a Professional Experience variant with a year-long industry placement and benefit from links with organisations including GSK and Microchip Technology. Graduates gain expertise in medical devices, healthcare technology, rehabilitation engineering, medical imaging and biomedical research, preparing them for careers in industry, hospitals, research institutions and postgraduate study.
