COURSE CURRICULUM

The BEng Architectural Engineering programme at the University of Reading provides a strong blend of engineering, architecture, sustainability, and digital construction, preparing students to design and manage energy-efficient buildings and sustainable built environments. In the first year, students develop core engineering and construction knowledge through modules in structural analysis, engineering mathematics, building services, site engineering, communication, and numerical modelling using Python. The second year builds on these foundations with advanced study of architectural design, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, building pathology, statistical analysis, and computational modelling, enabling students to understand how buildings function and perform. In the final year, students focus on specialist areas such as heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) design, sustainable built environments, digital construction technologies including Building Information Modelling (BIM), and an independent dissertation project. Optional modules allow further exploration of environmental management, inclusive and accessible design, human resource management, health and safety, and professional industry experience through a year-long placement. Throughout the degree, sustainability remains a central theme, covering energy efficiency, environmental assessment, resource management, urban sustainability, and climate-responsive design. Students gain practical skills in engineering analysis, programming, research, project management, digital technologies, and professional communication while learning to solve real-world challenges in the built environment. Supported by a highly ranked School of the Built Environment with internationally recognised research strengths in energy systems, urban environments, and sustainable construction, the programme offers opportunities for industrial placements and close links with industry. Graduates leave equipped for careers in architectural engineering, building services engineering, environmental engineering, sustainable construction, building performance analysis, project management, and related sectors, with the technical expertise and professional skills required to contribute to the development of resilient, efficient, and environmentally responsible buildings and cities.
