COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Modern Languages and International Relations degree combines the study of a modern language with a rigorous exploration of global politics, security, and contemporary international issues. In the first stage, students study core Politics modules such as Politics of Climate Change, International Relations, and War and Warfare, which introduce key theories, ethical debates, and the structures shaping global order and conflict. Alongside this, students develop proficiency in French, German, Italian, or Spanish at beginner, intermediate, or advanced levels, while also engaging with cultural modules that explore national identity and regional history. In the second stage, students build methodological and analytical skills through modules such as The Study of Politics and Global Order, while continuing language study and preparing for the Year Abroad. Additional optional modules explore topics including German politics and culture, French intellectual traditions, Spanish and Latin American culture, and Italian history and society. The Year Abroad provides opportunities to study, work, or teach abroad, significantly enhancing linguistic fluency and intercultural understanding. In the final stage, students advance to higher-level language modules reaching CEFR C1/C2 level, alongside specialist international relations topics such as political change, conflict, and global security. Optional modules further examine issues like climate politics, cultural narratives of conflict, and contemporary global crises. Graduates develop strong communication, analytical, and intercultural skills for careers in diplomacy, policy, international organisations, and global industries.
