COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Modern Languages and History programme combines advanced language study with historical inquiry, enabling students to develop strong linguistic, analytical, and research skills. In the first stage, students build a foundation in historical study through modules such as Perspectives in History and Making History and You, which introduce historical methodologies, historiography, and independent research techniques. Alongside these, students study French, German, Italian, or Spanish at beginner, intermediate, or advanced levels, while exploring the history, culture, and identity of the corresponding language regions through specialist modules. In the second stage, students continue progressing in their chosen language through intermediate and advanced modules while preparing for their Year Abroad. Additional cultural and historical modules examine topics including the First World War, cinema, intellectual history, revolution, national identity, language variation, and literary traditions across Europe and Latin America. The Year Abroad provides opportunities for study, work placements, or language teaching, enhancing linguistic fluency and intercultural competence. In the final stage, students undertake an Extended Essay and study Language and Power, developing advanced research and critical analysis skills. Further specialist modules explore themes such as conflict, dictatorship, memory, diversity, identity, film, publishing, and social change. Graduates emerge with excellent communication, intercultural awareness, historical understanding, and language proficiency, preparing them for a wide range of international careers.
