COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Modern Languages and English Literature programme combines advanced language learning with the study of literary traditions, writing, and culture. In the first stage, students explore key literary concepts through modules such as Poetry in English, which examines poetic traditions from the Renaissance to the present, and Theory and Practice of Writing, which develops critical and creative writing skills. Students also study French, German, Italian, or Spanish at beginner, intermediate, or advanced levels, alongside culture-focused modules that introduce the histories, societies, and identities of the respective language regions. In the second stage, students continue developing linguistic proficiency through intermediate and advanced language modules while completing English Literature modules, including at least one focused on pre-1900 literary periods. Specialist cultural modules examine topics such as war, cinema, intellectual history, literature, and national identity across Europe and Latin America. Students also undertake preparation for their compulsory Year Abroad, where they enhance language skills and intercultural awareness through study, work placements, or teaching assistantships. In the final stage, advanced language modules lead students towards high levels of fluency, reaching CEFR levels from B2.2 to C1/C2. Additional specialist modules explore themes including memory, dictatorship, diversity, conflict, publishing, identity, and cultural representation. The programme develops strong communication, analytical, intercultural, and research skills, preparing graduates for diverse international careers.
