COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Modern Languages and English Language degree at the University of Reading combines the study of a modern language with English linguistics to help you understand how language operates in society and communication. You can choose French, German, Italian, or Spanish, and develop your language skills alongside a strong foundation in English language analysis. In the first year, core modules such as Sounds, Grammar and Meaning and English Language and Society introduce the structure of language, including phonetics, grammar, meaning, and how language functions in different social contexts. Alongside this, you study a language module at beginner, intermediate, or advanced level depending on prior experience. As you progress, you deepen your linguistic knowledge through modules like English Grammar and Phonology and Sociolinguistics, where you explore language variation, identity, inequality, and communication in society. You also continue developing your chosen language through increasingly advanced study, building fluency in speaking, writing, and comprehension. A key feature of the degree is the compulsory year abroad, where you enhance your language skills through immersion, study, or work placements such as teaching or internships. In the final stage, you take advanced language modules up to C1/C2 level and can specialise further. The programme builds strong analytical, intercultural, and communication skills, preparing you for careers in translation, international work, media, and education.
