COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Modern Languages and Economics at the University of Reading combines the study of economics with advanced language learning in French, German, Italian, or Spanish, allowing students to develop strong analytical and international communication skills. In the first year, students build a foundation in economics through Principles of Economics 1 and 2, covering microeconomics, macroeconomics, and basic economic modelling, alongside Quantitative Methods and Data Analysis to develop essential numerical and research skills. At the same time, students begin or continue their chosen language through beginner, intermediate, or advanced language modules aligned with their prior experience. In the second year, the programme progresses to Intermediate Microeconomics and Intermediate Macroeconomics, deepening understanding of consumer behaviour, markets, economic policy, and macroeconomic systems, while language study continues at a higher level, focusing on fluency in speaking, writing, and cultural understanding. A key feature of the degree is the compulsory Year Abroad, where students either study at a partner university or undertake a work placement in a country where their language is spoken, strengthening both linguistic ability and intercultural awareness. In the final year, students complete advanced language modules reaching B2 to C2 level proficiency, alongside continued academic development in economics. This integrated structure equips graduates with strong economic reasoning skills, high-level language fluency, and valuable international experience, preparing them for careers in global business, finance, diplomacy, translation, and international organisations.
