COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Ancient History degree at University of Reading provides an in-depth exploration of the ancient Greek and Roman worlds from around 2000 BC to 600 AD, examining their history, politics, society, culture, religion, literature, and lasting influence on modern civilisation. The course is highly flexible and research-led, allowing students to tailor their studies to their interests while benefiting from internationally recognised teaching and research. In the first year, students build a foundation through modules covering Greek and Roman history, ancient literature, writing systems, and material culture, while optional modules include Ancient Greek, Latin, museum studies, and ancient poetry. The second year develops historical knowledge further through studies of Classical Greece, the Roman Empire, and employability-focused modules that may include work placements. Students can also choose from subjects such as ancient epic, drama, Greek art and architecture, museum engagement, and advanced language study. In the final year, students undertake either a dissertation or an independent research project, demonstrating advanced research, analytical, and communication skills. Optional specialist modules explore topics such as race and ethnicity in the ancient world, classical rhetoric and persuasion, and advanced Ancient Greek and Latin language study. Throughout the degree, students learn how to interpret archaeological, literary, historical, and visual evidence, evaluate competing scholarly arguments, conduct independent research, and communicate complex ideas effectively. The programme develops valuable transferable skills including critical thinking, analytical reasoning, research, writing, presentation, cultural awareness, and problem-solving. Graduates leave with a strong understanding of the ancient Mediterranean world and its continuing relevance, making the degree suitable for careers in education, museums, heritage, archaeology, publishing, media, public service, law, cultural organisations, and many other professional fields that value research, communication, and analytical expertise.
