COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA War, Peace and International Relations degree at the University of Reading offers a structured programme that combines theoretical study with practical analysis of global conflict and security. In the first year, students study International Relations, focusing on key theories and learning to critically evaluate competing arguments about the contemporary international order. Politics of Climate Change examines ethical and political debates surrounding environmental challenges, while Introduction to Contemporary Democracy explores how democratic systems operate globally, including issues such as electoral systems, political parties, and political participation. Introduction to Political Ideas develops understanding of core political theory concepts such as authority, freedom, democracy, and social justice. War and Warfare provides foundational knowledge of conflict, examining its causes, types, and implications for international security. Degree Core Competencies support academic development through skills in writing, referencing, teamwork, and communication. In the second year, students take The Study of Politics, along with War and Peace since 1800, which uses historical evidence to analyse patterns of conflict and strategic thought. Global Order examines how international systems are structured, while Contemporary Strategy focuses on real-world strategic challenges through case studies and simulations. Advanced Degree Competencies further prepare students for independent study and employment. In the final year, students complete a dissertation, producing an original research project under academic supervision.
