COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Primary Education with Mathematics Specialism (QTS) at the University of Reading is designed to prepare students as qualified primary school teachers with a strong emphasis on developing mathematical understanding and teaching expertise. Across the three-year programme, students combine academic study with extensive school placements, gradually building the knowledge, skills, and professional confidence required for classroom practice. In the first year, students are introduced to core curriculum areas including English, mathematics, computing, science, physical education, and foundation subjects, alongside professional studies and global citizenship themes. A key focus in mathematics is the exploration of child development theories and effective learning environments that support numeracy development. In the second year, students deepen their understanding of curriculum design and pedagogy in English, mathematics, and science, while also studying international approaches to mathematics education and how mathematical thinking connects with other subjects. The final year focuses on consolidating professional practice, refining pedagogical approaches, and preparing for full classroom responsibility through research-informed teaching. Students also study mental and physical health in education and develop leadership skills relevant to becoming mathematics subject leaders. By graduation, students are fully equipped for Qualified Teacher Status and are prepared to lead and improve mathematics teaching within primary schools.
