COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Primary Education with English Specialism (QTS) at the University of Reading combines professional teacher training with an in-depth focus on English teaching across the primary curriculum. Across the three years, students progressively build the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to become qualified primary school teachers, supported by extensive school placements that develop practical classroom experience alongside academic study. In the first year, students are introduced to core curriculum areas including English, mathematics, computing, science, physical education, and foundation subjects, while also exploring global inclusion, social justice, and educational pedagogy. A key focus in English is understanding reading frameworks, children’s literature, and the foundations of effective English teaching. In the second year, students deepen their understanding of English curriculum development and pedagogy, while also studying science, mathematics, and foundation subjects in greater depth. Specialist English modules explore narrative, poetry, and performance, including the use of drama and texts such as Shakespeare to support literacy learning. The final year focuses on consolidating professional teaching practice, refining pedagogical skills, and preparing for full classroom responsibility. Students also engage in research-informed practice and explore mental and physical health in education. By graduation, students are fully prepared for Qualified Teacher Status and leadership roles in primary English education.
