COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Primary Education with Art Specialism (QTS) at the University of Reading is structured to combine academic study, professional teacher training, and sustained school-based experience, while also developing specialist expertise in art education. In the first year, students build a foundation in core primary curriculum areas such as English, mathematics, computing, science, physical education, and foundation subjects, alongside modules in professional studies and school placement that introduce classroom practice and pedagogy. A strong emphasis is placed on inclusion, global perspectives, and social justice in education, as well as developing an understanding of how art can be taught effectively in primary settings. In the second year, students deepen their subject knowledge across English, mathematics, science, and foundation subjects while continuing placements that allow them to apply theory in real classroom environments. Specialist art modules develop students as reflective artist-teachers, strengthening both their personal creative practice and their ability to integrate art into teaching. The final year focuses on refining pedagogical expertise, consolidating subject leadership skills, and preparing students for full teaching responsibilities through extended placements. Additional study includes areas such as mental and physical health in education, research-informed practice, and leadership in art education, ensuring graduates are fully prepared for Qualified Teacher Status and professional teaching careers.
