COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Politics and International Relations degree at the University of Reading provides a structured programme that combines theoretical understanding with practical analytical skills to explore global political challenges. In the first year, students study International Relations, focusing on major theories and the ability to critically evaluate competing arguments about the contemporary international order. Politics of Climate Change examines ethical and policy debates surrounding environmental issues, while Introduction to Contemporary Democracy explores how democratic systems function globally, including topics such as electoral systems, political parties, voting behaviour, and political change. Introduction to Political Ideas introduces key themes in political theory, including authority, freedom, democracy, and social justice. Alongside these, Degree Core Competencies help students build essential academic and professional skills such as writing, referencing, teamwork, and presentation. In the second year, students take The Study of Politics, which introduces research methods, along with Comparative Government and Politics, Global Order, and Political Classics, covering global political systems, international structures, and foundational political thinkers. Advanced Degree Competencies further support academic development and career preparation. In the final year, students complete a dissertation, producing an independent research project in consultation with a supervisor. This degree equips students with strong analytical, theoretical, and research skills to understand and evaluate complex global political issues.
