COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) at the University of Reading is an interdisciplinary degree that combines three complementary disciplines to help students understand and critically evaluate complex issues in contemporary society. In the first year, students build a foundation through core modules such as Reason and Argument, which develops logical and critical thinking skills, alongside Principles of Economics 1 and 2, which introduce microeconomics, macroeconomics, and the role of markets and government intervention. Students also study Politics of Climate Change, examining ethical and policy debates around environmental challenges, and Introduction to Political Ideas, which explores key themes in political theory including authority, freedom, democracy, and social justice. In the second year, the focus shifts to more advanced study with Intermediate Microeconomics and Intermediate Macroeconomics, alongside The Study of Politics, which introduces research methods and deeper political analysis. In the final year, students complete an independent dissertation in philosophy, politics, or economics, or an alternative independent learning module, allowing them to specialise in an area of interest and develop original research skills. Across the degree, students gain strong analytical, ethical, and quantitative abilities, learning to apply philosophical reasoning, political analysis, and economic theory to real-world issues. This prepares graduates for careers in public policy, government, international organisations, consultancy, research, journalism, and other fields requiring critical thinking and interdisciplinary understanding.
