COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Museum Studies and Archaeology degree at the University of Reading provides a structured three-year programme that combines archaeological science, heritage studies, and practical museum training. In Year 1, students build a strong foundation through compulsory modules such as Revolutions and Transitions: The Human Journey from 6 Million Years Ago to the Present Day, which explores human evolution and the development of societies using archaeological evidence, and Archaeology Today: Methods and Practice, which introduces modern fieldwork techniques, excavation methods, and post-excavation analysis. Students also study Early Empires: Mesopotamia, Egypt and Rome, examining the archaeology, politics, economy, and daily life of ancient civilisations, along with Presenting the Past: An Introduction to Museum Studies, which focuses on museum practice, collection methods, interpretation, and the role of museums in addressing contemporary social issues. In Year 2, students continue developing archaeological and museum expertise through advanced study of methods, theory, and applied practice. In Year 3, the programme culminates in the Display Design, Planning and Creation project module, where students design, curate, and install a public exhibition using university collections. This project is supported by a literature review and exhibition diary, allowing students to demonstrate research, analytical, and curatorial skills. Overall, the degree prepares graduates for careers in archaeology, museums, heritage management, and cultural sectors.
