COURSE CURRICULUM
The BA History and Economics degree combines historical inquiry with economic analysis to help students understand both long-term societal change and contemporary global issues. In the first stage of study, you are introduced to core ideas in both disciplines through Perspectives in History, where you explore different historical periods, regions, and approaches while also examining historiography and methods used by historians, and Making History and You: Practices and Possibilities, which develops essential research, reading, and writing skills through an independent project. Alongside this, you study Principles of Economics 1 and 2, which provide an introduction to microeconomics and macroeconomics, helping you understand how markets function, how governments influence economic outcomes, and how economic systems interact with real-world problems. You also build foundational quantitative skills through Quantitative Methods and Data Analysis, preparing you for more advanced economic study. In the second stage, you progress to more rigorous economic theory with Intermediate Microeconomics and Intermediate Macroeconomics, where you explore topics such as game theory, market structure, inflation, unemployment, and economic growth, while strengthening your ability to analyse policy debates. In your final stage, you complete either a History Dissertation or an Economics Dissertation, allowing you to conduct independent, in-depth research on a topic of your choice. Overall, the degree develops strong analytical, research, and critical thinking skills by linking historical context with economic understanding.
