COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Typography and Graphic Communication programme at the University of Reading provides a structured and industry-focused education in design, combining creative practice, research, and professional development. In the first stage, students build foundational skills through modules such as Professional Development 1, Design Literacy, Type and Typography, Information Design 1, Brand and Persuasion 1, and User Experience 1. These introduce key areas of graphic communication including typography, branding, information design, and UX, while developing research, analytical, and communication skills. Students begin to understand how design shapes communication and influences user behaviour across print and digital media. In the second stage, students advance their expertise through Professional Development 2, Design and Discourse, Editorial Design, Brand and Persuasion 2, Information Design 2, and User Experience 2. This stage deepens engagement with design history, theory, and professional practice while strengthening technical and conceptual abilities in complex visual communication projects. In the final stage, students produce a Design Portfolio, complete a Dissertation, and undertake Professional Practice work, applying their skills to real-world briefs and building a strong industry-ready portfolio. Across the degree, students develop advanced capabilities in typography, branding, editorial design, UX, and information design, supported by critical thinking and research. The programme prepares graduates for careers in graphic design, UX design, branding, publishing, and other creative industries.
