COURSE CURRICULUM
BA Film and Theatre provides a balanced combination of practical creative production and critical study across film, television, and theatre. In the first year, students build a strong foundation in performance analysis, film studies, television studies, filmmaking, scriptwriting, and theatre production. Core modules such as Analysing Theatre and Performance, Approaches to Film, Approaches to Television, Introduction to Filmmaking, Introduction to Scriptwriting, and Staging Texts develop essential skills in storytelling, production, performance, design, and media analysis. Students gain hands-on experience using professional equipment while learning how creative and technical decisions shape audience experiences. In the second year, students begin to specialise by choosing pathways focused on either screen production or collaborative performance practice, alongside modules such as Film Forms and Cultures or Identity, Performance and Culture. Optional modules allow students to explore areas including documentary filmmaking, directing, dramaturgy, acting, television studies, Shakespeare in performance, employability skills, and professional screen industry roles. These modules strengthen both practical and analytical abilities while providing insight into contemporary creative industries. In the final year, students undertake a major independent project through an Advanced Film/TV Project, Advanced Theatre-making Project, Creative Research Project, or Dissertation. Advanced optional modules enable students to focus on specialist interests such as Commercial and Community Filmmaking, Set Design, Musical Theatre, Scriptwriting for Stage and Screen, Adaptations across Stage and Screen, and Screen Bodies. Throughout the programme, students learn to combine creative practice with research, critical reflection, collaboration, and professional development. The course places a strong emphasis on industry-relevant skills, including filmmaking, performance creation, directing, script development, production management, design, and audience engagement. Graduates leave with a portfolio of practical work, experience of collaborative creative projects, and a strong understanding of the cultural, historical, and social contexts of film, theatre, and television. Career opportunities include film and television production, theatre and performance, directing, scriptwriting, arts management, community arts, media industries, creative content production, cultural organisations, education, and a wide range of roles within the broader creative and entertainment sectors.
