COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA English Literature and Politics programme at the University of Reading combines literary analysis with the study of political systems to help you understand how ideas, texts, and institutions shape society. In English literature, you will explore key forms such as poetry and written composition through modules like Theory and Practice of Writing and Poetry in English, studying texts from the Renaissance to the present and engaging with global voices from regions including Ireland, the Caribbean, and North America. These modules also encourage you to reflect on themes such as identity, gender, politics, and social change through literary expression. Alongside this, the politics component provides a structured introduction to political theory and systems. You will study Introduction to Political Ideas, Introduction to Contemporary Democracy, and Politics of Climate Change, developing an understanding of democracy, political ideologies, governance, and global environmental challenges. You will also take The Study of Politics, which introduces key research methods and approaches used in political analysis. As you progress, you will build advanced analytical and research skills, culminating in a final-year dissertation in either English Literature or Politics, where you complete an independent research project. The degree develops strong critical thinking, communication, and analytical abilities, preparing you for careers in politics, media, law, education, public policy, and cultural sectors.
