COURSE CURRICULUM

BA English Literature and Film & Theatre combines the study of literature, film, theatre, and performance, allowing students to explore how stories are created, interpreted, and adapted across page, stage, and screen. In the first year, students build a foundation in literary analysis, poetry, film studies, and theatre performance through modules such as Theory and Practice of Writing, Poetry in English, Analysing Theatre and Performance, and Approaches to Film. Optional modules introduce areas including drama, filmmaking, American culture, translation studies, and comparative literature. In the second year, students deepen their understanding of film, theatre, and literary traditions through modules such as Film Forms and Cultures or Identity, Performance and Culture, while choosing from subjects including Victorian Literature, Contemporary Fiction, Documentary, Directing and Dramaturgy, Shakespeare, Television and Contemporary Culture, Early Modern Literature, Critical Thinking, and Publishing Studies. Students are encouraged to develop analytical, creative, and professional skills, with opportunities for work-related learning through placement and employment modules. In the final year, students complete a major independent project through an English Literature Dissertation, Film and/or Theatre Dissertation, or Creative Research Project. Advanced optional modules allow specialisation in areas such as Scriptwriting for Stage and Screen, Adaptations across Stage and Screen, Film Programming and Film Festivals, Musical Theatre, Set Design, Shakespeare on Film, Literature and Mental Health, Children’s Literature, British Black and Asian Voices, Utopia and Dystopia, Jane Austen studies, Renaissance Drama, Fantasy Literature, and Screen Bodies. Throughout the degree, students develop critical thinking, research, communication, creative, and analytical skills while studying literature from different historical periods and engaging with contemporary film and theatre practices. The programme prepares graduates for careers in publishing, media, journalism, arts administration, theatre, film and television industries, cultural organisations, education, marketing, communications, and other creative and professional sectors.
