COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Education Studies programme develops a broad, interdisciplinary understanding of education by examining how learning, teaching, and educational systems are shaped by social, cultural, political, and psychological factors. In the first year, students study core modules such as Creative Learning Through the Arts, which explores the role of creativity in education through art, drama, and creative writing, alongside Education for Inclusion, which focuses on supporting diverse learners and inclusive practice. Psychology and Theories of Learning examines how learning theories are applied across different age groups, while Sociology, Education and Social Justice addresses inequality, identity, and structural factors such as class, gender, and ethnicity. Students also engage with Exploring Educational Practice and Key Debates in Education, which introduce teaching practice and major philosophical and policy debates. In the second year, learning becomes more applied through Contextualising Creative Learning through the Arts, Constructions of Childhood and Youth, Becoming an Educator, and Researching Educational Practice, which includes placement-based learning and preparation for independent research. In the final year, students critically examine education policy through Examining Educational Policy and complete a socially focused project in Changing Education, before undertaking a dissertation that allows them to explore a specialist topic in depth. Overall, the programme combines theory, practice, and research to develop analytical, reflective, and professional skills relevant to careers in education, community work, policy, and related fields.
