COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Classics programme develops strong expertise in ancient Greek and Latin through structured language learning alongside historical and cultural study of the ancient world. In Year 1, students begin with foundational modules such as Greek History: War, Society and Change in the Archaic Age, which examines key developments, conflicts, and societal changes in ancient Greece using historical evidence. Students also study Texts, Readers and Writers to build academic skills and gain an introduction to the literature, writing systems, and numerical traditions of ancient Greece and Rome. Alongside this, they begin learning Ancient Greek 1–3 and Latin 1–3, which introduce basic grammar, vocabulary, literature, and cultural context, enabling elementary reading of original texts. In Year 2, students progress to Latin 2–4 and Ancient Greek 2–4, strengthening their understanding of grammar and vocabulary while developing confidence in reading classical authors in their original languages. In Year 3, language study advances further through Ancient Greek 3–6 and Latin 3–6, focusing on unseen translation and achieving fluency through advanced linguistic analysis. Across all levels, students build the ability to interpret ancient texts directly while deepening their understanding of ancient cultures. Overall, the programme integrates language mastery with historical and literary study, preparing graduates for careers in research, education, cultural heritage, and related fields.
