COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Classical Studies and Ancient History programme provides a structured and in-depth exploration of the ancient Greek and Roman worlds, combining literature, history, culture, and material evidence. In Year 1, students build foundational knowledge through compulsory modules such as Texts, Readers and Writers, Ancient Song, Greek History: War, Society and Change in the Archaic Age, and The Past in the Present, which introduce key texts, historical developments, and the role of material culture and museums in understanding antiquity. In Year 2, the focus shifts to advanced study of classical literature and performance through modules such as Ancient Epic and Ancient Drama, alongside an employability module that prepares students for careers in Classics or includes a placement option. Students also choose from a wide range of optional modules, including Latin and Ancient Greek language study, rhetoric and persuasion, race and ethnicity in the ancient world, ancient biography, philosophy and politics through Aristotle, Roman history under Nero, Xenophon’s Anabasis, and the Aksumite Kingdom of ancient Ethiopia. These options allow students to tailor their degree according to their interests in literature, history, language, or culture. In the final year, students complete an independent dissertation or project in Classics, demonstrating advanced research skills. Overall, the programme develops critical thinking, analytical ability, and historical understanding for diverse academic and professional careers.
