COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Classical Studies and English Literature programme combines the study of ancient civilizations with the analysis of English literary traditions, providing a broad and interdisciplinary understanding of texts, culture, and critical interpretation. In the first year, students study core compulsory modules such as Texts, Readers and Writers, which introduces literature, writing systems, and numerical systems of ancient Greece and Rome, and Theories and Practice of Writing, which develops critical and compositional skills through engagement with authors, editors, and publishers. Students also study Poetry in English, covering poetic forms from the Renaissance to the present, including diverse voices from across the English-speaking world, and Ancient Song, which explores lyric poetry from ancient Greece and Rome. In later stages of the degree, students build a balanced mix of Classics and English Literature modules, including a required focus on ancient epic or drama and at least one pre-1900 literary period module. An employability-focused module further enhances professional skills. The final year centres on independent academic work through options such as a Dissertation in Classics, an Independent Project in Classics, or a Dissertation in English Literature, allowing students to conduct in-depth research on a topic of interest. Overall, the programme develops strong analytical, research, and communication skills, preparing graduates for careers in education, publishing, media, writing, and cultural industries.
