COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Ancient History and History degree at the University of Reading combines the study of the ancient Greek and Roman worlds with wider global history from the medieval period to the modern era. Students explore political, social, cultural, military and intellectual history across different regions and time periods, developing strong research, analytical and communication skills. In the first year, core modules introduce Greek and Roman history, historical methods, historiography, and academic research skills, while optional subjects cover topics such as early modern warfare, Cold War nuclear fears, US environmental diplomacy, medieval legends, museum studies, population debates, and classical languages including Latin and Ancient Greek. During the second year, students deepen their understanding through specialised options in ancient history, literature, archaeology and world history, studying themes such as the Persian Wars, the Roman Empire, South Asian colonial history, twentieth-century Europe, the Middle East, Black Britain, medieval medicine, the Crusades, Atlantic history, American history, museum engagement and public history projects, alongside employability and placement opportunities. In the final year, students complete either a History dissertation, a Classics dissertation, or an independent research project, allowing them to specialise in an area of personal interest. Advanced options include race and ethnicity in the ancient world, rhetoric and persuasion, medieval magic, women in politics, history education, fascist Europe, evolution and eugenics, the American Civil War, utopian societies, migration and deportation in Britain, Caribbean piracy, and the Cold War. Students may also continue studying Latin, Ancient Greek, modern languages or university-wide modules. The programme provides a broad interdisciplinary understanding of human societies from antiquity to the present, supported by internationally recognised research and excellent teaching, preparing graduates for careers in education, heritage, museums, archives, public service, research, journalism, publishing, law, cultural organisations and many other professional sectors.
