COURSE CURRICULUM
The BA Ancient History and Archaeology degree at University of Reading combines the study of ancient civilisations with practical archaeological training, providing a multidisciplinary understanding of human societies from prehistory through the Greek and Roman worlds. In the first year, students build foundations in archaeological methods, excavation practices, early empires such as Mesopotamia, Egypt and Rome, and the history of ancient Greece and the Roman Republic. Optional modules allow exploration of museum studies, forensic anthropology, social anthropology, ancient languages including Greek and Latin, and the interpretation of cultural heritage. In the second year, students can tailor their studies through a wide range of specialist modules covering field excavation, professional archaeological practice, bioarchaeology, forensic archaeology, sustainability, prehistoric and medieval Europe, Roman Britain, heritage management, museum collections, ancient literature, Egyptian hieroglyphs, and the societies of Greece and Rome. Practical experience is a major feature, with opportunities to participate in archaeological field schools, excavation projects, artefact analysis, and museum-based learning. In the final year, students complete an independent dissertation or research project in archaeology or classics while choosing from advanced modules covering heritage and cultural property, food archaeology, biological anthropology, post-excavation analysis, Mesopotamian civilisation, Roman identity, race and ethnicity in antiquity, Late Antiquity, Ancient Ethiopia, Nero’s Rome, Xenophon’s Anabasis, leadership in the ancient world, rhetoric and persuasion, and professional summer placements. Throughout the degree, students develop expertise in archaeological fieldwork, artefact analysis, historical interpretation, critical thinking, research design, data analysis, academic writing, and communication. The programme benefits from world-leading research in both Archaeology and Classics and offers opportunities for placements, study abroad, museum internships, and professional development. Graduates leave with strong analytical, investigative, and problem-solving skills suited to careers in archaeology, heritage management, museums, cultural organisations, education, archives, publishing, tourism, public service, research, consultancy, and other sectors that value evidence-based analysis, historical understanding, and project management expertise.
