COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Speech and Language Therapy (Pre-registration) program combines theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and professional development to prepare students for a career as registered speech and language therapists. Core modules cover applied sciences relevant to therapy practice, clinical and professional practice across the lifespan, and specialized areas such as eating, drinking, and swallowing. Students are trained to critically contribute to the evidence base and evaluate services to improve clinical practice and population health outcomes. Interprofessional practice is a key component, encouraging collaboration with peers from other healthcare disciplines to enhance teamwork and holistic care. Practical linguistics and phonetics are integrated to strengthen communication assessment and intervention skills. Extensive placements form a central part of the program, with students participating in four structured placements and an optional enrichment placement to gain hands-on experience in diverse clinical settings, including hospitals, schools, and community services. These placements allow students to apply theoretical learning to real-world practice, develop clinical decision-making, and refine professional and ethical competencies. By combining rigorous academic study with immersive practical experience, the program ensures graduates are confident, reflective, and capable of providing safe, effective, and evidence-based care to individuals with speech, language, communication, and swallowing needs across the lifespan.
