COURSE CURRICULUM

The core and optional modules of the MA English Literature program provide students with a broad and flexible foundation for advanced literary study while allowing them to specialise in areas of interest. The core module, Contemporary Approaches to Literature, introduces students to critical theories, methodologies, and frameworks for analysing texts, enabling them to engage deeply with diverse literary forms and contexts. Optional modules allow for exploration of specific periods, genres, and thematic concerns, providing opportunities for students to develop expertise in areas such as Gothic literature, ecological and post-human literary studies, and utopian and dystopian narratives. Gothic Spaces examines the interplay between setting, narrative, and cultural anxieties, while Literature, Ecology, and the Post-Human explores the intersection of environmental and literary studies. Robin Hood and the Outlaw Tradition focuses on medieval and early modern literary representations of law, social justice, and cultural identity. The Nineteenth-Century Novel provides critical engagement with the major literary, social, and historical developments of the period, and Writing Utopia and Dystopia considers literary visions of idealised and dystopian societies. Together, these modules combine theoretical, historical, and thematic perspectives, equipping students with analytical, research, and interpretive skills necessary for independent study, scholarly research, and careers in writing, publishing, education, and related creative industries.
