COURSE CURRICULUM

The core and optional modules of the MA Conservation of Cultural Heritage program provide students with a comprehensive understanding of conservation theory, practice, and research. Core modules such as Conservation Practice and Conservation Practice and Sharing Knowledge introduce students to essential hands-on techniques while emphasising the importance of communicating conservation processes and outcomes to diverse audiences. Conservation Skills in Context allows students to apply practical skills in real-world scenarios, while Investigative Techniques in Heritage focuses on analytical and scientific methods used to assess, document, and preserve cultural heritage objects. Material Culture, Conservation and Significance explores the historical, social, and cultural value of artefacts, supporting informed decision-making in conservation interventions. The program culminates in a Research Project, offering students the opportunity to undertake an independent study that integrates theoretical knowledge with practical expertise. Optional modules such as Collections Management and Care provide insight into the preservation, organisation, and administration of heritage collections, while Digitising Cultural Heritage Collections equips students with skills in digital documentation, archiving, and accessibility. Together, these modules develop a balance of practical, theoretical, and research skills, preparing graduates for careers in heritage conservation, collection management, and cultural heritage projects, and enabling them to engage critically and professionally with both traditional and emerging conservation practices.
