COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Mathematics with Philosophy course at the University of Lincoln offers a unique combination of quantitative and critical thinking skills, integrating mathematical theory with philosophical inquiry. In the first year, students build a strong foundation in both disciplines through modules such as Algebra, Calculus, Linear Algebra, Probability and Statistics, Geometrical Optics, Waves and Mechanics, and Ideas of Mathematical Proof, alongside introductory philosophy courses in Moral Philosophy and Philosophical Logic. The second year develops this knowledge further with advanced mathematics modules including Algebraic Structures, Complex Analysis, Differential Equations, Industrial and Financial Mathematics, Coding Theory, and Scientific Computing, paired with philosophy modules such as Existentialism and Phenomenology and Philosophy of Science. In the final year, students consolidate their learning through an Advanced Project and Communication module, Group Theory, and optional modules that allow for specialisation in areas like Applied Ethics, Philosophy of Psychiatry and Mental Illness, Classical Indian Philosophy, and fluid or mathematical physics topics including Fluid Dynamics, Numerical Methods, Tensor Analysis, and Methods of Mathematical Physics. The program emphasises problem-solving, logical reasoning, and analytical thinking, alongside creativity, reflection, and ethical awareness. Graduates develop versatile skills applicable to careers in data analysis, research, education, policy, and other fields requiring strong quantitative and critical reasoning abilities.
