COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Chemistry program at Lincoln is structured over three years to provide a thorough grounding in both theoretical and practical aspects of chemistry. In the first year, students develop a foundation in core topics such as electronic structure, spectroscopy, molecular bonding, energy changes, and chemical reactivity, while gaining hands-on experience through practical laboratory modules in fundamental techniques, synthetic methodologies, and molecular characterisation. Professional practice in analytical sciences introduces students to real-world applications of chemistry. The second year builds on this knowledge with advanced study of electronic structure, spectroscopy, and reactivity in d- and f-block compounds, molecular stability and mechanisms, and the chemistry of activated systems and radicals. Practical modules focus on organic and inorganic synthesis, purification, and structural characterisation, alongside professional practice in formulation and pharmaceutical sciences, providing exposure to applied chemical research and industry practices. In the final year, students explore advanced topics including stereochemistry, heterogeneous systems, surfaces, and nanoscience, complemented by advanced practical techniques and professional practice in energy and environmental sciences. Students also complete a structured project, applying their knowledge to independent research. Optional modules allow specialisation in areas such as biological chemistry or forensic chemistry. Overall, the course integrates theoretical understanding with practical and professional experience, preparing graduates for diverse scientific careers and research opportunities.
