COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Chemistry for Drug Discovery and Development features a structured three-year curriculum. In Year 1, students build foundational knowledge through Core Chemistry 1.1 and 1.2, covering energy, change, electronic structure, molecular bonding, and mechanisms. They are introduced to pharmaceutical science, professional practice, and analytical sciences, alongside Practical Chemistry 1.1 and 1.2, which focus on fundamental laboratory techniques, synthetic methodologies, and molecular characterisation. Year 2 advances to Core Chemistry 2.1 and 2.2, exploring stability, activated systems, and radicals, complemented by Drug Formulation and Delivery, Fundamentals of Pharmacology and Toxicology, and Professional Practice 2.2 in pharmaceutical sciences. Practical modules include organic and inorganic synthesis with advanced characterisation. In Year 3, students study Biological Chemistry, Business, Regulation and Ethics for the Pharmaceutical Scientist, and Core Chemistry 3.1 and 3.2 on stereochemistry, heterogeneous systems, surfaces, and nanoscience. Practical Chemistry 3.1 introduces advanced IO-chemistry techniques, culminating in a structured project that integrates research and application in drug discovery contexts. The progression ensures comprehensive theoretical, practical, and professional preparation for pharmaceutical industry roles.
