COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Animal Behaviour and Welfare degree is structured over three years, combining core modules with optional pathways to provide a comprehensive understanding of animal behaviour, welfare, and management. In the first year, students develop foundational knowledge through core modules including Animal Management, Comparative Anatomy and Physiology of Animals, Ecology, Introduction to Animal Behaviour and Welfare, Introduction to Life Sciences, and Research Methods for the Life Sciences. These modules establish essential skills in scientific observation, analysis, and understanding of animal biology and welfare principles. In the second year, the program advances with core modules such as Animal Behaviour, Animal Health and Disease, Animal Protection, Conservation Biology, and Data Skills for the Life Sciences, while optional modules allow students to explore Evolution, Immunology, Invertebrate and Vertebrate Zoology, Managing Ecosystems, Reproduction and Development, Study Abroad opportunities, and a UK Field Course. In the final year, students consolidate learning through core modules in Animal Cognition and Welfare, Applied Animal Behaviour, and a Life Sciences Research Project, which allows them to apply practical and research skills to real-world challenges. Optional modules include Behavioural Ecology, Control of Animal Disease, Overseas Field Course, Plant and Animal Interactions, Practical Skills in Conservation, and Veterinary Parasitology. This combination of theory, practical experience, and research prepares graduates for careers in animal welfare, conservation, research, and related fields, equipping them with the expertise to improve animal wellbeing across diverse contexts.
