COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Modern History degree at the University of Lincoln offers a comprehensive exploration of history from 1800 to the present, combining core studies with a wide range of optional topics that encourage critical thinking and research skills. In the first year, students develop foundational knowledge through modules such as Critical Thinking and Writing, Empires: Power and Resistance, Forging the Modern State, Identities in the Modern World, The Historian’s Craft, The Past in Public: Lincoln’s History, and The United States from Colonies to Civil War, alongside optional modules exploring China, US history, and conservation. The second year expands students’ understanding through modules like Dissertations and Beyond and New Directions in History, while offering a broad selection of options covering migration, gender, empire, popular culture, digital heritage, decolonisation, and global politics. Opportunities for study abroad or teaching-focused modules further enrich the experience. In the third year, students undertake an independent study project while choosing from specialised options such as Air War and Society, Anarchism in Modern Europe, Eugenics and Race, Chinese Medicine, Queer History, colonial material culture, urban history, and the US Civil Rights Movement. Across all years, the program emphasizes research, analysis, and historical interpretation, equipping graduates with the skills and knowledge to pursue careers in education, heritage, research, policy, or other fields requiring critical thinking and historical expertise.
