COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Journalism Studies course offers a balanced mix of theoretical understanding and practical journalism training. In the first year, students are introduced to the foundations of journalism through modules such as Essential Journalism, Journalism Production, Politics for Journalists, and Law, alongside an introduction to higher education and journalism studies. These modules help develop core writing, reporting, and analytical skills, with shorthand offered as an optional skill enhancement. The second year builds on this foundation with modules like Essential Journalism 2, News Days, and Project-based Production, supported by Law, Ethics and Regulation, and Research Methods. Optional modules such as Histories of Journalism, Industry Placement, Journalism and Society, and Ethics and International Human Rights allow students to broaden their perspectives and gain real-world experience. In the final year, students complete an Independent Study and Professional Journalism Production, alongside Specialist Journalism, which refines their expertise in chosen areas. Optional subjects like Political Journalism, Sports Journalism, Peace and Conflict Reporting, and Comparative Media History enable further specialisation. The course blends academic research, practical experience, and ethical awareness, preparing students for diverse roles in journalism, media, and communications while fostering a critical understanding of journalism’s influence in society.
