ABOUT UNIVERSITY
The University of Lincoln is a public research university in Lincoln, England, with origins tracing back to 1861. It achieved university status in 1992 as the University of Humberside and adopted its current name in 2001. The main campus, located alongside the Brayford Pool in the heart of Lincoln, symbolizes a major urban regeneration project that has transformed the city’s economy and landscape. The university also has satellite campuses in Riseholme and Holbeach, with graduation ceremonies held in the historic Lincoln Cathedral. Its formation was the result of a series of mergers among earlier institutions, including the Hull School of Art, Hull Technical Institute, and Kingston upon Hull College of Education. These merged in 1976 to form the Hull College of Higher Education, later renamed Humberside College of Higher Education in 1983. After gaining university status in 1992, it expanded into Lincoln and became the University of Lincolnshire and Humberside in 1996. Queen Elizabeth II officially opened the Lincoln campus, marking it as the first new city-centre university campus built in the UK for decades. Over £375 million has since been invested in the Brayford Pool site, creating over 3,000 jobs and generating more than £250 million annually for the local economy. In 2004, the National Centre for Food Manufacturing at Holbeach was redeveloped as a specialist food-science park, enhancing the university’s applied research and industry partnerships. The university also acquired De Montfort University’s Lincolnshire schools, including the Lincoln School of Art and the Lincolnshire School of Agriculture. In recent years, the university has consolidated its presence in Lincolnshire, focusing on innovation, sustainability, and healthcare education. The opening of the Lincoln Medical School in 2021, in partnership with the University of Nottingham, represents a major step forward in regional healthcare education and research, strengthening Lincoln’s role as a modern centre for learning and discovery.
