COURSE CURRICULUM

The core modules of the MSc in Criminology provide a comprehensive foundation for understanding crime, its causes and its consequences, while equipping you with strong research and analytical skills. Criminological Research Methods, delivered as a double module, develops your ability to design, conduct and evaluate research using both qualitative and quantitative approaches. You will learn how to collect, interpret and present data effectively, preparing you for advanced academic work or evidence-based professional practice. Theorising Crime and Deviance, also a double module, introduces you to key criminological theories, examining how social, psychological, economic and cultural factors shape criminal behaviour and societal reactions to it. This module encourages you to think critically about how definitions of crime and deviance evolve across different contexts. Rethinking Punishment and Rehabilitation explores the principles, practices and controversies surrounding sentencing, corrections and offender rehabilitation. It challenges traditional assumptions and focuses on how punishment systems can be improved to promote justice and reduce reoffending. Victimology examines the experiences, rights and needs of victims of crime, as well as the social and institutional responses they encounter. Together, these modules offer an integrated understanding of crime, offenders and victims, preparing you for diverse roles within criminal justice, research or policy.
