COURSE CURRICULUM

The core modules in this program provide a structured and in-depth foundation for understanding crime, deviance and the psychological factors that shape criminal behaviour and justice processes. Criminological Research Methods, delivered as a double module, equips you with the essential skills needed to design, conduct and evaluate research in crime and forensic psychology, emphasising methodological rigour and the interpretation of complex evidence. Theorising Crime and Deviance, also a double module, explores key criminological theories, helping you understand why crime occurs, how societies define deviance and the social, cultural and psychological factors that influence offending. Mental Disorder, Justice and Crime examines the relationship between mental health conditions, criminal responsibility and legal decision-making, encouraging critical reflection on issues such as competency, culpability and treatment within the justice system. Forensic and Legal Psychology focuses on applying psychological principles to investigations, court processes and offender management, covering topics such as eyewitness memory, risk assessment and professional practice in forensic settings. Together, these modules develop your ability to analyse crime from interdisciplinary perspectives, apply research evidence to real-world challenges and engage with debates central to criminology, psychology and the operation of modern criminal justice systems.
