COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Advanced Mechanical Engineering combines core and optional modules to provide a thorough understanding of modern mechanical systems and their design. Core modules include an Engineering Design Case Study, allowing students to engage in practical, real-world problem solving, Fluid Instability, Transition and Turbulence, which explores complex fluid behaviours and their implications for engineering applications, and Advanced Solid Mechanics, which develops expertise in the analysis of stresses, strains, and material behaviour in structural components. Students also undertake an Individual Project, giving them the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge and practical skills to a focused research or design problem, fostering independence and innovation. Optional modules allow further specialisation, with choices such as Rotorcraft Mechanics and Control or Spacecraft Systems Engineering, providing insight into aerospace applications. Additional modules, including Signal Processing, Advanced Composite Materials, Attitude and Orbit Control Systems, Advanced Gas Turbines, and Computational Fluid Dynamics, develop technical competence in computational modelling, materials engineering, and the control of complex mechanical systems. The combination of analytical, computational, and experimental approaches ensures that graduates acquire the practical and theoretical skills necessary to address advanced challenges in mechanical engineering. This program prepares students for careers in industry, research, or further postgraduate study, equipping them to contribute effectively to innovation and technological development.
