COURSE CURRICULUM

The core modules of the History MRes are designed to provide students with advanced research skills and the opportunity to undertake a substantial independent research project. Historical Research, Historical Writing introduces essential methodological skills, including critical engagement with primary and secondary sources, evaluation of historical evidence, and the development of coherent, well-structured academic arguments. This module equips students with the analytical tools and writing proficiency required to conduct rigorous historical research and to communicate their findings effectively. The MRes Dissertation is the central component of the degree, allowing students to pursue an extended, independently conceived research project under the guidance of an expert supervisor. This module provides the flexibility to explore a topic of personal interest in depth, develop original scholarship, and produce a piece of work that may be suitable for publication. Together, these modules combine methodological training with practical research experience, enabling students to plan, execute, and present complex historical research to a high academic standard.
